Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Right for You?
If you are missing teeth — or expecting to lose several — the two most common solutions are dentures and dental implants.
While both can improve appearance and help you function better, they are fundamentally different in how they work and what they provide long-term. At our office, Dr. Pournik evaluates your bone, bite and overall oral health to determine which option will give you the most stable and lasting result — not just a short-term fix.

Traditional Dentures
Dentures have been around for decades and can restore the look of a full smile. However, because they rest on the gums instead of being anchored in bone, they can shift, lift or feel unstable when eating or speaking.
As time goes on, the jawbone naturally shrinks after teeth are lost. Dentures do not stop this process, which is why they often become looser and require relining or replacement.
Many denture wearers also find they need to avoid certain foods due to reduced chewing ability.

Dental Implants
Dental implants replace missing teeth at the root level. A small post is placed in the jawbone, and a crown, bridge or denture is attached to it.
Dr. Pournik plans implant treatment using 3D imaging and digital scans to ensure proper positioning, bite alignment and long-term stability. When needed, she often performs bone grafting at the time of extraction to help preserve the jaw and support future implants, rather than allowing bone loss to occur.

Benefits of Dental Implants Vs Dentures
Stability and Longevity
Because implants integrate with the bone, they create a firm foundation for replacement teeth. This allows them to function much more like natural teeth and remain stable over time.
Implants also help maintain bone, which is one of the key differences compared to dentures and a major reason they are considered a long-term solution.
Chewing Ability
A major difference patients notice is how much easier it is to eat.
Traditional dentures typically restore only a small portion of natural chewing strength — often around 20%. Since they sit on the gums, they can move under pressure.
Implant-supported teeth are significantly more stable. Depending on the type of restoration, patients can regain approximately 60–90% of their normal chewing ability, allowing them to enjoy a much wider range of foods.
Bone Preservation
After tooth loss, the jawbone begins to shrink due to a lack of stimulation.
Dentures do not stop this process, which can eventually affect both appearance and fit.
Implants function like natural roots, helping maintain bone structure and support the facial profile over time.

Implant Options That Replace Dentures
Many patients who come to us for implants have worn dentures in the past.
Over time, they become frustrated with movement, reduced function or reliance on adhesives. Implant treatment allows us to secure replacement teeth directly to the jaw, creating a more stable and natural-feeling result.
Depending on your needs, options may include:
During your consultation, Dr. Pournik will assess your bone, bite and overall condition using advanced diagnostics and recommend the approach that best fits your situation and long-term goals.
