A Passion for Dentistry, Artistry, and Making a Difference

If you had asked me when I was younger what I wanted to be, I probably would have told you either a physician or a pilot. I was fascinated by both, and for a while, I wasn’t entirely sure which direction I wanted my life to take.  I took my time through college, exploring my interests and figuring out what I truly wanted to do. In 1996, I moved to Texas and continued my education at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, where my background in biology naturally led me toward a career in healthcare.  I had always loved science and medicine, but after volunteering in a hospital, I realized that the hospital environment wasn’t quite where I saw myself spending my career. I wanted to help people and make a difference in their lives, but I also wanted something that allowed me to be creative, work with my hands, and appreciate the artistic side of what I was doing.

That’s when dentistry caught my attention. What initially seemed like a wonderful combination of healthcare, science, and aesthetics turned into a career that has challenged, inspired, and rewarded me in ways I could never have imagined.

Over the years, I have developed a particular passion for cosmetic dentistry, complex restorative treatments, and full-mouth rehabilitation. I love the challenge of taking a complicated case, carefully planning every detail, and creating a result that is not only beautiful but also comfortable, functional, and long-lasting.  To me, dentistry is as much an art as it is a science. Every patient is different, and I believe the best results come from understanding the individual, listening to their concerns, and taking the time to do things properly.

One of the things I value most about my profession is that there is always something new to learn. I have never been content to simply rely on what I already know. My commitment to continuing education, including advanced training at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies (LVI), reflects my belief that patients deserve a dentist who continues to grow, improve, and embrace advances in dentistry.

At Applewhite Dental Arts, I have worked to create a practice that reflects those values. I want my patients to feel comfortable asking questions, discussing their concerns, and being involved in decisions about their care. Whether someone needs a single restoration or a complete smile transformation, my approach is the same: thoughtful planning, attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to doing what is right for that person.

Outside of dentistry, I enjoy staying physically active, spending time with my animals, and being outdoors. I believe that maintaining a healthy, active life and continuing to challenge myself, both personally and professionally, keeps me energized and enthusiastic about what I do.

Looking back, life certainly took me in a different direction than I originally imagined. I never became a physician or a pilot, but I found a profession that allows me to combine so many of the things I love: science, creativity, precision, and meaningful connections with people. And after all these years, I still look forward to the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life, one smile at a time.

With a growing focus on providing high-quality dental replacement and beautiful smiles, Dr. Pournik has attended prestigious institutions that offer advanced postgraduate training in cosmetic and implant dentistry. This training supports her ability to plan cases that balance aesthetics with function. Her experience includes hundreds of cosmetic cases, including over 500 veneer treatments.
  • She has been awarded a fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) and has been placing implants since 2012.
